A fire safety risk assessment is typically made up of five key steps :
- Identify Fire Hazards – Recognize anything that could start a fire, such as ignition sources (electrical equipment, heating, cooking) and combustible materials
- Identify People at Risk – Determine who might be at risk, including occupants, especially vulnerable individuals like young, disabled, or lone workers
- Evaluate and Act – Assess the premises for fire safety measures such as exits, alarms, emergency lighting, and fire extinguishers, and decide what actions are needed to reduce risks
- Record, Plan, and Train – Document the findings, create a fire safety plan, train staff on fire procedures, and conduct fire drills
- Review – Regularly review and update the fire risk assessment to ensure it remains effective, especially after significant changes
These five steps form the standard framework recommended by UK authorities and fire safety experts for conducting comprehensive fire risk assessments
