There are four main public universities in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa:
- Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Port Elizabeth
- Rhodes University in Grahamstown
- University of Fort Hare (UFH) in Alice
- Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha
These four universities are recognized and accredited institutions providing a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs
. Additionally, the University of South Africa (UNISA) has a presence but is a national distance education university rather than a regional campus
. Thus, the Eastern Cape has four principal universities serving the region.
