Current playoff format
Since the 2020 expansion, the NFL postseason includes 14 teams total: seven from the AFC and seven from the NFC. In each conference, four teams are division winners and the remaining three spots are wild cards.
Wild card teams per conference
Each conference (AFC and NFC) has three wild card teams that qualify without winning their division but having the best remaining records. Across both conferences, that makes six wild card teams in total.
