Prophet Muhammad is said to have had a total of 13 wives, although the status of two—Rayhana bint Zayd and Maria al-Qibtiyya—is ambiguous, with some scholars debating whether they were wives or concubines. Of the confirmed wives, the list traditionally includes 11 named women. At the time of his death, he had 9 wives. His first wife was Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, and following her death, he married others over the years during his life in Medina. These wives are respectfully called "Mothers of the Believers" in Islam. The marriages served various social, political, and compassionate purposes within the context of that era.
