There have been two recognized World Wars: World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945), both of which involved many countries from around the world in large-scale conflict. While there have been earlier global conflicts and historians sometimes debate the definition of a "world war," the term conventionally refers to these two major wars.
