Qatar reportedly spent approximately $220 billion on the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This amount far exceeds the spending of any previous World Cup host and is about 15 times more than what Russia spent in 2018. However, the majority of this investment was not solely for the World Cup stadiums but for a wide range of infrastructure projects including building a new city, hotels, a metro rail system, airport expansion, roads, a seaport, gas and oil facilities, and other utilities. Of this total, the direct cost for building and renovating eight stadiums was estimated between $6.5 billion to $10 billion. Much of the spending was also aligned with Qatar's broader development plans under its 2030 vision, meaning these infrastructure investments will benefit the country long after the World Cup ended.
