Full moons occur roughly every 29.5 days, which is the length of the lunar phase cycle known as the synodic month. This is the time it takes for the Moon to go through one complete set of phases from full moon to full moon again. Because of this cycle, there is typically one full moon each calendar month, but occasionally a month can have two full moons, known as a "blue moon".
