Albuterol inhaler is typically used as 1 or 2 puffs every 4 to 6 hours as needed for symptoms like wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath. The usual maximum is up to 12 inhalations (puffs) per day if prescribed by a doctor. For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm, 2 puffs are taken 15 to 30 minutes before exercise. You should not use the inhaler more than 4 times in 24 hours regularly; if more frequent use is needed, it may indicate worsening of the condition and the need for medical advice. In a severe asthma attack, the dose can increase to up to 10 puffs, with 30 to 60 seconds between each puff, but this should be followed by urgent medical care. Using the inhaler more than the prescribed amount can lead to side effects like increased heart rate, nervousness, and headaches, and you should contact a doctor if frequently requiring the inhaler.
