The general guideline for Pap smears is:
- Ages 21 to 29: Get a Pap smear every 3 years.
- Ages 30 to 65: Get a Pap test every 3 years alone, or a Pap and HPV co-test every 5 years.
- Over 65: Pap smears may not be necessary if there has been no history of abnormal cells or cervical cancer and prior tests have been normal.
Pap smears are not generally needed before age 21, and certain risk factors or health history may require more frequent screening. Women with a total hysterectomy usually do not need Pap tests, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider.
