School shootings in the U.S. have become increasingly frequent over the years. In 2024, there were 332 shooting incidents at K-12 schools alone, resulting in 267 injuries and fatalities. This marks a significant increase compared to previous decades, with more than 400 school shootings reported since the Columbine massacre in 1999. On average, this means there are multiple school shootings every week across the country. The frequency has risen to nearly one school shooting per day in recent years, and in 2023, there were a record 348 school shootings at K-12 schools, causing 249 casualties. Most shootings happen in high schools (about 60%), with middle schools and elementary schools also affected.
Therefore, school shootings in the U.S. occur roughly multiple times per week, reflecting a troubling trend of increasing gun violence on school campuses. The upward trajectory in incidents and casualties shows no signs of abating in recent years.
