Ties in the NFL are relatively rare, especially since the introduction of overtime in 1974. Before overtime, ties were more frequent, with the most ties in a single season being 17 in 1920. Since 1974, when a sudden-death overtime period was instituted, ties have become much less common, with only 29 ties occurring in regular season games over several decades. On average, ties happen in about 3.4% of overtime games. The most ties recorded in a single season since overtime is two, which has happened in a few seasons including 1986, 1997, 2016, 2018, and 2022. The most recent NFL tie was played on December 4, 2022, ending 20-20 between the Washington Commanders and New York Giants.
