The frequency of Pap smears generally depends on age, health history, and prior test results. According to the latest guidelines:
- Women aged 21 to 29 should have a Pap smear every 3 years.
- Women aged 30 to 65 have options depending on testing type:
- Pap smear alone every 3 years, or
- HPV test alone every 5 years, or
- Co-testing with Pap smear and HPV test every 5 years.
- After age 65, Pap smears may no longer be necessary if there have been consistently normal results and no history of cervical abnormalities.
More frequent Pap smears may be recommended if there have been abnormal test results, a history of cervical cancer or precancerous lesions, high-risk HPV, a compromised immune system, or other specific risk factors. Routine Pap smear screening is typically not recommended before age 21. It is best to discuss your individual circumstances with your healthcare provider to tailor a screening schedule suited to your health needs.
