The Copa America is currently held every four years. This schedule was established starting in 2020 to align the tournament with the UEFA European Championship, which also occurs every four years. Before this change, the tournament had an inconsistent frequency, with periods of being held every two years, every three years, or even annually in some historical phases. There have been exceptions, such as the special Copa America Centenario in 2016. The 2020 edition was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the four- year cycle continues, with the next tournament after 2024 scheduled for 2028.
