The general recommendation is to change a tampon every 4 to 6 hours, but it can be safely left in for up to 8 hours. If the menstrual flow is heavier, changing it more frequently, like every 3 to 4 hours, may be necessary to prevent leakage and reduce the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Using the lowest absorbency tampon appropriate for the flow on a given day is also advised.
Tampons should never be left in for more than 8 hours due to the increased risk of TSS, a rare but serious condition associated with bacterial toxin buildup. For lighter flows, using smaller absorbency tampons and possibly leaving them in closer to 8 hours may be acceptable, but for heavier flows, changing every 4 to 6 hours is safer. It is also important to wash hands before and after tampon changes for hygiene.
