Most kids start losing baby teeth around early grade-school age, but there is a normal range.

Typical starting age

Most children lose their first baby tooth around ages 5 to 6, often in kindergarten or first grade.

Dentists consider it normal to start anywhere from about age 4 to 7, depending on individual development and when baby teeth first came in.

Which teeth go first

The first teeth to fall out are usually the lower front teeth (lower central incisors), followed by the upper front teeth.

These front teeth typically loosen and come out between ages 6 and 7 before the side front teeth and molars follow over the next several years.

How long the process lasts

Once it starts, kids usually keep losing baby teeth off and on until around age 11 to 12, when most permanent teeth have come in.

By the early teen years, most children have their full set of permanent teeth, with wisdom teeth (if they develop) coming later.
