The Temptations are 64 years old.
Formed in 1961 in Detroit, Michigan, by merging members from two local doo-wop
groups, The Primes and The Distants, the group initially went by the name The
Elgins before signing with Motown Records that March. They officially became
The Temptations after their Motown audition, with original members Otis
Williams, Melvin Franklin, Elbridge "Al" Bryant, Eddie Kendricks, and Paul
Williams. As of December 2025, this marks over six decades of music, including
hits like "My Girl" and pioneering psychedelic soul.
