Yerevan is approximately 2,800 years old. It dates back to 782 BC when the fortress of Erebuni was founded by King Argishti I of Urartu. This makes Yerevan one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, even older than Rome by about 29 years. The city's history as an administrative, cultural, and economic center has continued through many centuries, surviving various empires and events to become the capital of modern Armenia today.
