Qatar is a small country with a total land area of about 11,571 square kilometers (4,468 square miles). It is a peninsula extending about 160 km (100 miles) north into the Persian Gulf, with a width ranging between 55 and 90 km (34 to 56 miles). Qatar's size is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Connecticut and only about a third the size of Belgium. Its shape is generally rectangular, often described locally as resembling the palm of a right hand extended in prayer.
