Diarrhea before labor typically starts within 24 to 48 hours prior to the onset of labor, although this timing can vary widely among individuals. It can also occur a few days before labor or even up to two weeks prior in some cases. This diarrhea is linked primarily to hormonal changes, especially the surge in prostaglandins that soften the cervix and stimulate uterine contractions, as well as increased intestinal activity. The baby's descent into the pelvis and emotional factors can also contribute to this symptom. However, not all women experience diarrhea before labor, and its presence alone is not a reliable predictor of when labor will begin. If diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours, is accompanied by fever, blood, or severe abdominal pain, medical advice should be sought. Staying hydrated is particularly important when diarrhea occurs late in pregnancy.
