Everclear is extremely strong, typically bottled at 95% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is equivalent to 190 proof. This makes it more than twice as potent as standard spirits, which are often around 40% ABV (80 proof). Due to this high concentration of alcohol, Everclear is very potent and potentially dangerous if consumed straight or in large amounts. It's often used in cocktails or as a base for other liqueurs rather than being drunk neat. Its strength has also led some U.S. states to ban or restrict its sale because of safety concerns like acute alcohol poisoning and flammability risks. Everclear is one of the strongest readily available spirits in the United States, slightly less potent than Spirytus Rektyfikowany, a Polish spirit at 96% ABV (192 proof).
