how strong is whiskey

Whiskey is a strong alcoholic drink, typically around 40% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is about 80 proof.

Typical strength

Most standard whiskeys (Scotch, bourbon, Irish, etc.) are bottled at 40–43% ABV, though some common releases go up to about 46% ABV. This makes whiskey several times stronger than beer, which is usually around 4–6% ABV.

Stronger varieties

Many “cask strength” or “barrel proof” whiskeys are not diluted much (or at all) before bottling and can range from about 50% up to 60%+ ABV. Legally sold whiskey is generally between about 40% and roughly 62.5% ABV; above that, spirits are usually categorized differently (for example as neutral spirits or moonshine).

Health and drinking context

Because whiskey is concentrated, a small serving (like a 25–30 ml shot at 40% ABV) contains about the same alcohol as a typical half-pint of regular- strength beer. Guidelines in many countries recommend limiting total weekly alcohol and spreading drinks over several days, especially with strong spirits like whiskey.
