To back up your iPhone, you have two main options: using iCloud or using a computer.
Backing up iPhone using iCloud
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > tap your name at the top > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Turn on Backup This iPhone.
- Your iPhone will automatically back up daily when it is connected to power, locked, and on Wi-Fi.
- To back up manually, tap Back Up Now.
- If you have a 5G iPhone, you can enable backing up over cellular in the same settings.
- iCloud backup includes device settings, app data, Home Screen layout, and more, but excludes some data like Apple Pay settings and Face ID settings
Backing up iPhone using a computer
- On a Mac (macOS Catalina or later):
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac with a USB cable.
- Open Finder and select your iPhone in the sidebar.
- Click the General tab.
- Select Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac.
- To encrypt your backup (recommended to save passwords and health data), check Encrypt local backup and set a password.
- Click Back Up Now.
- On a Windows PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier:
- Open iTunes and connect your iPhone.
- Click the iPhone icon near the top left.
- Go to the Summary tab.
- Click Back Up Now.
- For encrypted backups, check Encrypt local backup and set a password before backing up
Additional notes
- Encrypted backups save more data, including passwords and health info.
- iCloud backups are convenient and automatic but require enough iCloud storage.
- Computer backups are faster and can be stored locally without storage limits.
- You can restore your iPhone from these backups after resetting or replacing your device
This covers the main ways to back up your iPhone comprehensively and securely.
