To breed horses in Minecraft, follow these steps:
- Find and Tame Horses
Locate horses in the Plains or Savannah biomes, where they spawn in groups. Tame two horses by mounting them repeatedly (right-click or left trigger) with an empty hand until hearts appear, indicating they are tamed
- Prepare Breeding Items
You need either Golden Carrots or Golden Apples to breed horses. Golden Carrots are more resource-efficient, requiring 8 gold nuggets to craft around a carrot, while Golden Apples require 8 gold ingots
- Breed the Horses
Bring the two tamed horses close together and feed each one a Golden Carrot or Golden Apple by right-clicking or using the left trigger. Hearts will appear above them, and shortly after, a foal (baby horse) will be born
- Foal Growth
The foal will be too small to ride initially and takes about 20 minutes to mature into an adult horse. You can speed up growth by feeding the foal sugar, wheat, apples, or hay bales. Once grown, the foal can be tamed, saddled, and ridden like any other horse
- Improving Horse Stats
Breeding horses can improve their stats (speed, jump height, health). The foal’s stats are generally an average of the parents’ stats but can vary slightly. To breed better horses, test and select parents with desirable traits and breed them repeatedly to try to produce superior offspring

- You can also breed a horse with a donkey to produce a mule, but mules cannot be bred further
