To change a tire, follow these steps:
- Prepare the car
Park on a flat, level surface away from traffic. Apply the parking brake and put the car in first gear (manual) or park (automatic). Turn on your hazard lights and remove passengers from the vehicle
- Secure the vehicle
Place wheel chocks or heavy objects (like bricks) behind or in front of the opposite wheel to prevent rolling
- Loosen the lug nuts
Use a tire iron or wrench to loosen the lug nuts by turning them counterclockwise. Do this while the car is still on the ground. Loosen them enough so they can be turned by hand but do not remove them completely yet
- Lift the vehicle
Locate the jack point on the vehicle frame (consult your owner’s manual if unsure). Use the jack to lift the car until the flat tire is off the ground. If available, place a jack stand for safety
- Remove the lug nuts and tire
Fully unscrew the lug nuts and remove the flat tire from the hub
- Mount the spare tire
Align the spare tire with the wheel bolts or studs and place it onto the hub. Hand-tighten the lug nuts to hold the tire in place
- Lower the vehicle
Carefully lower the car back to the ground by lowering the jack and removing any jack stands
- Tighten the lug nuts securely
Use the wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star or crisscross pattern to ensure even tightening. If you have a torque wrench, tighten them to the manufacturer’s recommended torque (usually between 80 and 120 ft-lbs)
- Check your work
Double-check that all lug nuts are tight and secure
- Clean up and store tools
Put away the jack, wrench, and flat tire. Consider getting the flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible
This process can typically be done in about 20 minutes with the right tools and safety precautions
. Always consult your vehicle’s owner manual for any specific instructions or safety information related to your car
. If you feel unsafe or unsure at any point, it is advisable to call roadside assistance
