To clean the outside AC unit, follow these steps:
- Turn off the power to the AC unit at the thermostat and near the unit itself by disconnecting the electrical supply.
- Remove any large debris such as leaves, grass, or sticks around and inside the unit by hand.
- Using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment, carefully clean the condenser fins. Use a fin comb to straighten any bent fins.
- Gently spray the unit with a garden hose on a gentle or fan setting to remove loose dirt and debris.
- Spray the outdoor unit coil with an AC coil cleaner, following the manufacturer's instructions, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to foam and break down the grime.
- Rinse the coil cleaner off thoroughly with the hose, again using gentle water pressure to avoid damaging fins.
- Clear any drainage areas to ensure proper water flow.
- Keep the area around the unit clear of plants, furniture, or other obstructions for at least 2 to 3 feet to ensure good airflow.
This cleaning should be done at least once yearly, ideally in the spring, and more often if the area is dusty or dirty.
