To clear a stuffy nose, several effective methods can be used at home:
- Nasal wash: Rinse the inside of the nose using a nasal irrigation kit or neti pot with saline solution to soften and wash out mucus for instant relief.
- Steam inhalation: Breathe in steam from a hot shower, a bowl of hot water covered with a towel, or hot tea to thin mucus and promote drainage.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, including water, tea, or broths like chicken soup, to thin mucus and relieve congestion.
- Warm compress: Apply a warm, moist compress to the nose and forehead to reduce inflammation and open nasal passages.
- Use a humidifier: Adding moisture to the air soothes irritated nasal tissues and swollen blood vessels.
- Over-the-counter medications such as decongestants can also help but should be used carefully.
For quick mechanical relief, deep breathing exercises can help open nasal passages as well. If congestion lasts more than two weeks, consulting a doctor is recommended.
