Most DVD players can connect to a smart TV in a few simple steps, but the exact method depends on the ports on both devices. Check first what connections your DVD player and TV have (HDMI, red/white/yellow AV, or component red/green/blue).

Step 1: Identify your ports

Look at the back of the DVD player and the TV for labels like HDMI, AV/Video In (yellow, red, white), or Component In (red, green, blue plus red/white audio).

If both devices have HDMI, that is the easiest and gives the best picture and sound.

Step 2: If both have HDMI

  • Plug one end of an HDMI cable into HDMI OUT on the DVD player.
  • Plug the other end into an HDMI IN port on the TV, noting which HDMI input number you used (e.g., HDMI 1).

Step 3: If DVD has AV (red/white/yellow) only

  • If the TV has matching AV inputs, connect yellow to yellow (video), red to red, and white to white (audio).
  • If the TV has only HDMI, use an AV‑to‑HDMI converter: connect the DVD’s red/white/yellow cables to the converter, then run an HDMI cable from the converter to the TV and power the converter via USB or adapter.

Step 4: If using component (red/green/blue)

Connect the DVD’s component video outputs (red/green/blue) to the TV’s matching component inputs, then connect a separate red/white audio cable from DVD audio OUT to the TV’s audio IN for that component input.

Component uses three video cables plus two audio cables, so be sure all five plugs match the color‑coded jacks.

Step 5: Select input and test

Turn on the DVD player and TV, then use the TV remote’s Input/Source or TV/Video button to choose the HDMI, AV, or Component input you connected to.

Insert a disc and press play on the DVD player; if you see the DVD screen, the connection is complete, otherwise cycle through inputs until the DVD picture appears.
