To cut a mango, follow these basic steps:
- Stand the mango upright on a cutting board with the stem down.
- Using a sharp knife, slice off the two wide sides (called mango cheeks) about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the center where the large flat seed is located.
- You will have two large mango cheeks and a middle section with the seed.
- Score the flesh of each cheek in a grid pattern without cutting through the skin.
- Turn the cheeks inside out by pushing the skin side up to pop out the mango cubes.
- Use a spoon or knife to scoop or cut off the cubes from the skin.
- For the middle seed section, carefully slice off any remaining flesh and eat it.
Alternatively, you can peel the mango with a vegetable peeler or use a glass to separate the skin from the flesh before cutting. This method maximizes the fruit you get and minimizes waste and mess while working around the large seed in the center of the mango.
