The easiest way to dice an onion involves a few key steps to keep it safe and efficient:
- Prepare the onion by cutting off the top (stem end) but leave the root end intact. Peel off the skin.
- Cut the onion in half vertically through the root.
- Place one half flat on the cutting board with the root facing away.
- Make vertical cuts about 1/4 inch apart from the cut end toward the root, but don't cut all the way through the root so the onion holds together.
- Rotate the onion half 90 degrees.
- Slice vertically again about 1/4 inch apart to create diced pieces, stopping before the root.
- Finally, cut off the root end and dice that part separately to avoid waste.
Using a "claw" grip to hold the onion protects your fingers and keeps the cuts even. This method produces small, evenly diced onion pieces and is both easy and safe to do at home.
