To create a hanging indent in Microsoft Word on a Mac, follow these steps:
- Open your Word document and highlight the text or paragraph(s) where you want to apply the hanging indent.
- Go to the Format menu at the top of your screen.
- Select Paragraph from the dropdown menu.
- In the Paragraph dialog box, under the Indents and Spacing tab, find the Special dropdown menu.
- Choose Hanging from the Special options.
- Adjust the indent size in the By field if needed (the default is usually 0.5 inches).
- Click OK to apply the hanging indent.
Alternatively, you can use the ruler at the top of the document:
- Make sure the ruler is visible (enable it via the View menu if not).
- Highlight the text, then drag the bottom triangle (left indent marker) on the ruler to the right to set the hanging indent length, while keeping the top triangle (first line indent marker) at the left margin.
Shortcut: After highlighting the text, you can press Command + T to quickly create a hanging indent. This formatting style indents every line except the first line of a paragraph, commonly used in bibliographies or reference lists to improve readability and presentation
