To do split screen on an iPad, follow these steps:
- Enable Split View & Slide Over
- Go to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures.
- Turn on Split View and Slide Over if they are not already enabled
- Open Split View with Two Apps
- Open the first app.
- Tap the three dots (multitasking button) at the top center of the app window.
- Tap the Split View icon (a square split halfway on either left or right side).
- The current app will dock to one side of the screen.
- From the Home Screen or Dock, tap the second app you want to open. It will appear side-by-side with the first app in Split View
- Adjust Split View
- Drag the black divider bar between the two apps to resize each app’s window. The screen can be split roughly half or one app can take a quarter of the screen
* You can switch which side each app appears on by tapping the multitasking button again and selecting left or right split
- Replace an App in Split View
- Swipe down on the multitasking button (three dots) of the app you want to replace.
- This app will slide away, revealing the Home Screen or Dock.
- Select a new app to replace it in the split screen
- Open Split View from the Dock
- Open an app.
- Swipe up slowly from the bottom to reveal the Dock.
- Press and hold the second app icon in the Dock, then drag it to the left or right edge of the screen to open it in Split View
- Exit Split View
- Tap the multitasking button (three dots) and select the Full Screen option to return to a single app view.
- Alternatively, drag the black divider bar all the way to one side to close one app and return to full screen
These steps work on iPads running iPadOS 15 or later and allow multitasking with two apps side by side. Note that not all apps support Split View mode, so the multitasking button may not appear on some apps
. This method lets you efficiently multitask, such as viewing Messages and Maps side by side or working on two documents simultaneously
