In Old School RuneScape, a skill cape becomes trimmed automatically the moment you reach level 99 in a second skill. There’s no NPC, item, or quest that “trims” it manually; the game just updates every untrimmed cape you own (inventory, bank, or player-owned house) to the trimmed version.
How trimmed capes work
- Your first level‑99 skill cape is untrimmed.
- As soon as you hit 99 in any other skill , all your untrimmed skill capes are permanently converted to trimmed versions.
- Once trimmed, a cape cannot be untrimmed again.
This applies to all standard skill capes (Attack, Hitpoints, Mining, etc.). Some special capes, like the quest point cape, have their own trimming requirements (e.g., completing all achievement diaries to trim the quest point cape), but the basic skill capes follow the “second 99” rule.
If you want to keep an untrimmed cape
Many players like the look of the first untrimmed cape and want to keep wearing it even after getting more 99s. The only reliable way to do this is to keep the untrimmed version in a keepsake box before your second 99. Typical method:
- Before training a second skill to 99, open a keepsake box (from Treasure Hunter or other sources) and store your untrimmed cape in it.
- Reach 99 in your second skill. All normal copies of that cape will trim, but the keepsaked copy remains untrimmed.
- You can then reclaim the untrimmed version from the keepsake whenever you want to wear it as an override.
Older workarounds like dropping the cape and telegrabbing it after hitting 99 were tested and found unreliable; the consistent, intended method is using keepsakes.
Buying and wearing trimmed capes
After you have at least two level‑99 skills:
- Any new skill cape you buy will be trimmed by default.
- You can still purchase and wear one per 99 skill, and each will show the trimmed gold border.
So, to “get a trimmed skill cape” in OSRS, you simply need two skills at level 99. The first cape you ever owned will then be trimmed, and every skill cape you obtain afterwards will also be trimmed.
