To get an NPI (National Provider Identifier) number, follow these steps:
- Go to the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website.
- Create an account by setting up a username and password on the CMS Identity and Access Management System (I&A).
- Log in to the NPPES portal with your credentials.
- Start a new NPI Application by selecting the appropriate entity type (Individual or Organization).
- Complete the required provider profile information, including business mailing address and practice location.
- Review and submit your application online.
You will receive your NPI number via email from [email protected] after your application is processed. The online process is recommended as it is faster, usually taking about 10 days for a correctly completed electronic application. Paper applications are also available but take longer, about 20 business days. Paper forms can be requested or downloaded from CMS and mailed to the NPI Enumerator address.
If you do not have a Social Security Number (SSN), you must submit a paper application along with identification documents and a letter explaining the absence of an SSN.
