To get rid of fruit flies in your house, the most effective and common method is to use DIY traps with apple cider vinegar and dish soap:
- Pour about half an inch of apple cider vinegar into a small bowl or jar.
- Add a few drops of dish soap, which breaks the surface tension causing the flies to sink and drown.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band.
- Poke small holes in the plastic wrap (large enough for fruit flies to enter but small enough to prevent escape).
- Place the trap near areas where fruit flies are active, such as the kitchen or near the trash.
Additional strategies to prevent and reduce fruit flies include:
- Avoid leaving out ripe or overripe fruit; store fruit in the refrigerator.
- Clean and dry kitchen drains and disposals to eliminate breeding sites.
- Dispose of garbage regularly to remove attractants.
- Consider making alternative traps using overripe fruit or old wine/beer to attract and trap fruit flies.
If fruit flies persist, also check and clean the kitchen sink drain by pouring boiling water to kill flies hiding there.
