To get your permit in California, follow these steps:
- Be at least 15½ years old.
- Complete an approved California driver education course and obtain a certificate of completion.
- Complete the Driver License or ID Card application form DL 44, signed by a parent or guardian if under 18.
- Schedule an appointment at your local DMV office.
- Bring required documents: driver education certificate, proof of identity and residency, social security number, and the signed DL 44 application.
- Pay the $31–$33 application fee.
- Pass a vision test.
- Pass the knowledge exam, which covers California traffic laws and road signs (usually 46 questions, with a passing score around 80%).
- Have your photo taken and provide a thumbprint.
- Receive your provisional instruction permit (learner's permit). With this permit, you must always drive with a licensed adult 25 or older in the car.
You must keep the permit for at least six months before applying for a driver’s license and follow permit restrictions such as no driving alone and no use of cell phones while driving under 18.
