To load a dishwasher properly:
- Place dishes with their dirty sides facing the center of the dishwasher, where the washer jets spray upward.
- Angle dishes downward to help with cleaning, drying, and draining.
- Avoid overcrowding; keep items separated so the water jets can reach all surfaces.
- Place items between the tines (the prongs that hold dishes), not over them, to keep dishes stable.
- On the top rack, load cups, mugs, glasses, small bowls, and plastic items facing down to avoid water pooling. Keep plastic on the top rack to prevent warping from the heating element.
- Place larger bowls, plates, pans, and pots on the bottom rack, also angled down facing the center.
- Load silverware in the basket, mixing handles up and down to avoid nesting and improve cleaning. Knives should be placed with blades down for safety.
- Scrape off large food debris before loading but do not rinse dishes as modern detergent enzymes clean better with some residue.
- Ensure spray arms can spin freely and detergent compartments can open unobstructed.
These guidelines help ensure dishes come out clean and undamaged after washing.
