To pick locks in Starfield, follow these steps:
- Make sure you have at least one Digipick (digital lockpick) in your inventory; this is required to attempt lockpicking
- Interact with the locked object to start the lockpicking minigame. The lock consists of 2 to 4 concentric rings, each with missing sections (slots) that need to be filled by keys
- On the right side of the screen, you will see several keys, each with a number of pins (blocks). Your goal is to rotate and slot these keys into the rings so that all the slots in each ring are completely filled, making the slots disappear
- Start with the ring that has the most slots (usually the outer ring) and try to find keys that fit perfectly into the slots by rotating them. Some keys may only fit one ring, while others can fit multiple rings
- Each key can only be used once, and each ring requires at least two keys to be fully filled
- Once you think a key fits, press the lock-in button ("F" on PC or "A" on controller) to slot it. Repeat this for all rings until all slots are filled and the lock opens
- If you fail or exit the minigame before completion, you lose the Digipick used for that attempt, so be careful
Tips to make lockpicking easier:
- Upgrade your Security skill to highlight which keys fit in the outer ring, making it easier to identify correct keys quickly
- Try to identify keys that only fit one ring first, then use multi-fit keys to fill remaining slots
- Place all keys in position before locking them in to avoid wasting Digipicks
- Be patient and use the ability to rotate keys freely to find the perfect fit before locking in
