To make a classic latte, follow these steps:
- Prepare the espresso : Brew a single or double shot of espresso directly into a latte glass or mug. A typical latte uses about 2 ounces of espresso
- Steam and froth the milk : Heat about 1/3 full of whole milk in a milk jug. Use a steam wand if you have an espresso machine to introduce air and create a smooth microfoam. Purge the steam wand first, then position it just below the milk surface to add air briefly, then submerge it to create a swirling motion. Heat until the milk is around 150°F (65°C) but not boiling
- Pour the milk : Start pouring the steamed milk into the espresso from a higher position (about 1-2 inches above the cup), then gradually lower the jug and steepen the angle to mix the milk and espresso well. Aim for a thin layer of milk foam on top, about 10 ml, which distinguishes a latte from a cappuccino that has more foam
- Optional : Add sweetener or flavorings if desired, and enjoy your latte warm
If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can brew strong coffee or use instant espresso powder and heat milk on the stove or microwave, whisking briskly to create foam before combining
. This method yields a creamy, smooth latte with balanced espresso flavor and velvety milk texture.
