To make brown sugar at home, you only need two ingredients: granulated white sugar and unsulphured molasses. Here is a simple method:
- Measure 1 cup of granulated sugar into a mixing bowl.
- Add 1 tablespoon of unsulphured molasses for light brown sugar. For dark brown sugar, increase the molasses to 2 tablespoons or more depending on your preference.
- Stir the sugar and molasses together thoroughly using a spoon, spatula, fork, or mixer until the mixture is evenly colored and no clumps remain. You can press any molasses lumps against the side of the bowl to break them up.
- Store the brown sugar in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out and hardening.
This process takes about 5 minutes and yields 1 cup of brown sugar. You can easily double or halve the recipe as needed. If your brown sugar hardens, placing a slice of bread in the container for several hours can soften it again
