To make a lavender wand, follow these steps:
- Gather an odd number of fresh lavender stems, usually between 13 to 19 stems is ideal.
- Strip the leaves off the stems to leave clean stalks.
- Align the lavender flower heads evenly and tie a ribbon tightly around the base of the flowers, leaving a long tail for weaving.
- Bend the stems gently down around the flowers to form a cage-like structure, scoring the stems gently to avoid snapping.
- Weave the long ribbon over and under the stems in an alternating pattern, pulling gently to keep the weaving snug but not too tight.
- Continue weaving until the flowers are fully covered by the ribbon.
- Use a toothpick or similar tool to tuck any buds sticking out into the weave.
- Wrap the ribbon around the base of the wand and tie it off into a bow.
- Trim the bottom of the stems evenly for a neat finish.
The finished lavender wand can be placed in drawers or closets for fragrance and to repel moths. It may last for many years, and the scent can be refreshed by gently squeezing the wand or adding a drop of lavender essential oil if needed.
