To make pour over coffee, follow these steps:
- Measure coffee and water at a ratio of about 1 gram of coffee to 16 milliliters of water. For example, 32 grams of coffee to 500 ml water for 2 cups.
- Grind the coffee beans to a consistency like fine sea salt.
- Place a paper filter in the dripper (like a Chemex or Hario V60) and wet the filter with hot water to remove paper taste. Discard this water.
- Add the ground coffee to the filter and gently shake to level the grounds.
- Start pouring hot water just enough to cover the grounds (~60-66 ml) to let the coffee bloom for about 30-45 seconds. This allows gases to escape and improves flavor.
- Pour the remaining hot water slowly in a circular motion, focusing on the center and occasionally near edges, keeping the grounds wet but not flooded.
- Total pouring time should be about 3-3.5 minutes.
- Once done, remove the filter and enjoy fresh coffee.
Warming the cup beforehand with hot water is a helpful tip to enhance the experience.
