To measure shoulder width accurately, follow these steps:
- Stand up straight with your arms relaxed at your sides and shoulders level.
- Locate the bony protrusions at the top of your shoulders (called acromion bones). You can find these by feeling the outer edges where your shoulder curves into your arm.
- Have someone help you measure the distance between these two points across the back of your shoulders with a flexible measuring tape. The tape should be straight and level.
- Record the measurement in inches or centimeters.
If measuring by yourself without help:
- Take a well-fitting T-shirt.
- Lay it flat on a table, smoothing out wrinkles.
- Measure the distance between the shoulder seams across the back.
- Record this measurement.
For best accuracy, stand with good posture, ensure the tape is level, and measure at the widest part of the shoulders, about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) below the neckline. This measurement is also known as the biacromial breadth or shoulder-to-shoulder width.
