To pin a boutonniere properly and securely, follow these steps:
- Position the Boutonniere
Place the boutonniere on the left lapel of the jacket, just above the heart, typically over the existing buttonhole, with the flower facing outward and the stem pointing downward
- Hold the Boutonniere Firmly
Pinch the boutonniere stem and lapel together firmly with your fingers to keep it steady while pinning
- Insert the First Pin
Fold back the lapel to expose the underside. Push the first pin through the back of the lapel fabric, then weave it through the thickest part of the boutonniere stem or the base where the flowers are gathered, and finally push it back through the lapel fabric. The pin should go in from the back of the lapel, through the stem, and out again, securing the boutonniere in place without poking through to the front
- Add a Second Pin for Extra Security (Optional but Recommended)
For better stability, especially if there will be a lot of movement or dancing, use a second pin. Insert it similarly but from a slightly different angle (for example, from the top down if the first was from the bottom up) to create a crisscross effect that holds the boutonniere firmly
- Check Stability
Gently tug the boutonniere to ensure it is secure. Adjust or add a third pin if necessary, but avoid too many pins to keep the look natural and neat
Using short boutonniere or pixie pins is ideal as they are less likely to poke through the lapel or be visible
