To play checkers, follow these basic rules and steps:
Setup
- The game is played on an 8x8 board with alternating dark and light squares.
- Each player has 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of the first three rows closest to them.
- One player uses dark pieces (usually black), the other uses light pieces (usually white or red).
- The dark pieces move first
Objective
- The goal is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so they cannot make any legal moves
Movement
- Pieces move diagonally forward to an adjacent empty dark square, one space at a time.
- Only one piece can be moved per turn.
- Pieces cannot move backward unless they are "kinged"
Capturing
- If an opponent’s piece is diagonally adjacent and the square immediately beyond it is empty, you must jump over and capture that piece.
- The captured piece is removed from the board.
- Multiple jumps are allowed in a single turn if possible, and must be taken
Kinging
- When a piece reaches the last row on the opponent’s side, it becomes a "king."
- A king is marked by stacking a piece underneath or flipping the piece.
- Kings can move and capture diagonally both forward and backward
Winning the Game
- The game is won by capturing all the opponent’s pieces or by blocking them so they have no legal moves left
Basic Strategies
- Control the center of the board for more mobility.
- Keep your pieces together to avoid easy captures.
- Try to keep pieces in your back row to prevent your opponent from kinging.
- Sometimes sacrifice a piece to gain a positional advantage or capture multiple opponent pieces
