To play Solitaire (Klondike), follow these steps: Setup:

  • Use a standard 52-card deck without jokers.
  • Deal seven piles (called the tableau) from left to right:
    • The first pile has 1 card face up.
    • The second pile has 1 card face up on top of 1 card face down.
    • The third pile has 1 card face up on top of 2 cards face down.
    • Continue this pattern until the seventh pile, which has 1 card face up on top of 6 cards face down.
  • The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
  • Leave space for four foundation piles above the tableau, where you will build sequences by suit starting with Aces

Objective:

  • Move all cards to the four foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King

Gameplay:

  • Move cards within the tableau by placing a card one rank lower and of the opposite color on top of another (e.g., a red 6 on a black 7)
  • You can move sequences of cards in descending order and alternating colors together.
  • When you uncover a face-down card in the tableau, flip it face up.
  • Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) can be moved to empty tableau columns
  • Draw cards from the stock pile (usually three at a time) to the waste pile; you can play the top waste card onto the tableau or foundations
  • When the stock pile is empty, you can recycle the waste pile back into the stock pile and continue drawing

Winning:

  • The game is won when all cards are moved to the foundation piles in ascending order by suit, from Ace to King

This setup and these rules describe the classic Klondike Solitaire, the most common version of the game
