To play Uno, follow these steps:
Setup
- Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards face down to each player.
- Place the remaining cards face down as the Draw Pile.
- Flip over the top card of the Draw Pile to start the Discard Pile. If this card is an action or wild card, flip another until you get a number card
Objective
- The goal is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
- The overall game winner is the first to reach 500 points, scored by the cards left in opponents' hands after you go out
Game Play
- Play starts with the player to the dealer's left and proceeds clockwise.
- On your turn, play one card from your hand that matches the top card of the Discard Pile by color, number, or symbol.
- If you cannot play a matching card, draw one card from the Draw Pile.
- If the drawn card can be played, you may play it immediately; otherwise, your turn ends
Special Cards
- Skip: Next player loses their turn.
- Reverse: Reverses the direction of play.
- Draw Two: Next player draws two cards and loses their turn.
- Wild: You choose the next color to be played.
- Wild Draw Four: You choose the next color, and the next player draws four cards and loses their turn (can be challenged)
Important Rules
- When you have only one card left, you must yell "UNO!" before the next player takes their turn.
- If you fail to say "UNO" and are caught before the next player acts, you must draw two penalty cards
- If you play a Wild Draw Four card, the next player can challenge you if they believe you had a playable card of the previous color. If you are caught cheating, you draw four cards; if the challenge fails, the challenger draws six cards
Winning a Round
- The first player to play all their cards wins the round.
- Scoring is based on the cards left in other players' hands
This covers the basic rules to start playing Uno correctly. Variations and house rules exist but are optional
