To reset your check engine light, you can try several methods depending on your tools and comfort level:
Simple Methods to Reset Check Engine Light
- Turn Ignition On and Off : Insert your key into the ignition and turn it on for 1-2 seconds, then off for 1-2 seconds. Repeat this cycle three or four times. This may clear the light if the issue is minor or resolved
- Disconnect the Battery :
- Use a wrench to loosen the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Remove the negative cable and keep it disconnected for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
- Optionally, press and hold the horn and turn on the headlights while the battery is disconnected to drain residual electrical charge, which helps reset the system.
- Reconnect the battery terminal and tighten it securely.
- Start the car and check if the light has turned off
Using an OBD-II Scanner
- If you have access to an OBD-II scanner, plug it into the vehicle’s diagnostic port (usually under the dashboard).
- Read the error codes to identify any issues.
- Once the underlying problem is fixed, use the scanner to clear the codes, which will reset the check engine light
Important Notes
- Resetting the check engine light without fixing the underlying problem is only a temporary solution; the light will likely come back on.
- If the light remains on after trying these methods, or if it returns shortly after resetting, have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue properly
These methods are generally applicable to most vehicles, including popular brands like Ford and Honda
