To screen record on a Chromebook, you can use the built-in screen recording tool with these simple steps:
- Open the Screen Capture Tool
Press Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows (the Show Windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines and is located in the function key row). This opens the screen capture menu at the bottom of your screen
-
Select Screen Record Mode
In the menu, click the Screen record icon (a video camera symbol). Then choose whether you want to record:- Full screen
- Partial screen (select a portion of your screen)
- A specific window (an app or browser window)
- Start Recording
Click the Record button to begin recording. If you want to include audio, click the settings (gear) icon before recording to enable microphone input
- Stop Recording
When finished, click the Stop recording button that appears at the bottom right of the screen. Your recording will be saved automatically to the Downloads folder by default
- Optional: Change Save Location
To save recordings elsewhere (like Google Drive or an external folder), open the screen capture menu again, go to Settings , and choose your preferred save folder
Additional notes:
- The default video format is WEBM, which you can convert to MP4 if needed for compatibility
- Chromebook's built-in recorder captures microphone audio but does not record internal system audio directly
- For more advanced features like webcam overlay or annotations, you can use the pre-installed Screencast app available on Chrome OS 104 or later
This method requires no third-party apps and works on most Chromebooks running Chrome OS 89 or later
