To shut off Instagram location sharing, follow these main steps:
- Disable location sharing on the Instagram Map:
- Open Instagram, tap the Messages icon at the top right of your feed.
- Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
- Tap the Settings (cog) icon.
- Under "Who can see your location," select "No one" or "Share with none."
- Confirm your choice by tapping Done or Update.
- Remove Instagram’s access to your device location in phone settings:
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Instagram, then select "Never" or disable Precise Location.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Instagram > Permissions > Location, then select "Deny."
- Avoid adding location tags in posts and stories since these also show location publicly.
