To shut off Instagram location sharing, follow these main steps:
- Disable location sharing on the Instagram Map:
- Open Instagram, tap the Messages icon at the top right of your feed.
- Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
- Tap the Settings (cog) icon.
- Under "Who can see your location," select "No one" or "Share with none."
- Confirm your choice by tapping Done or Update.
- Remove Instagram’s access to your device location in phone settings:
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Instagram, then select "Never" or disable Precise Location.
- On Android: Go to Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Instagram > Permissions > Location, then select "Deny."
- Avoid adding location tags in posts and stories since these also show location publicly.
With these steps, Instagram will no longer share your location through the Map feature or access your device’s location data. This enhances your privacy and stops your real-time location from being visible to others unless you choose to re-enable it later.
