To store mushrooms properly and keep them fresh for as long as possible:
- Store mushrooms in the refrigerator, ideally in the main compartment rather than the humid crisper drawer.
- Use a paper bag or keep them in their original packaging if it is a paper container. Paper allows mushrooms to breathe and absorbs excess moisture, preventing slime and spoilage.
- Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers, which trap moisture and cause mushrooms to spoil faster.
- Do not wash mushrooms before storing; instead, clean them just before use. If washed, dry them thoroughly.
- If you have loose mushrooms, place them in a paper bag and fold the top gently.
- For longer storage, washed mushrooms can be placed in a container lined with paper towels to absorb moisture.
- Mushrooms can be kept on the counter for about a day but are best refrigerated for longer freshness.
These methods can help keep mushrooms fresh for up to about one week or sometimes longer if moisture is well controlled.
